Understanding What Drives Your Career Choices

Understand what truly matters to you in your work and life choices.

The Career Anchor Inventory is a simple, research-based self-reflection tool designed to bring clarity to the values and motivations that shape your career decisions and long-term sense of fulfilment.

What is the Career Anchor Inventory?

Developed by Dr. Edgar Schein, a renowned psychologist, the Career Anchor Inventory helps people identify their core drivers – known as career anchors – that tend to remain important over time.

These anchors influence:

  • The kind of work you naturally gravitate toward
  • The environments where you feel most at ease
  • The choices you make at important transition points
  • Your overall sense of direction and satisfaction

The Nine Career Anchors

The inventory identifies nine core drivers that shape career preferences:

  • Autonomy / Independence – Desire for freedom and control over work
  • Balance / Lifestyle Integration – Need to harmonize work with personal life
  • Entrepreneurial Creativity – Drive to create, build, or innovate
  • Managerial – Motivation to lead, influence, and take responsibility
  • Organizational Identity – Sense of belonging to a larger purpose or institution
  • Pure Challenge – Enjoyment of solving difficult problems and overcoming obstacles
  • Security / Stability – Preference for predictability and long-term assurance
  • Service / Dedication – Desire to contribute to a cause or help others
  • Technical / Functional – Passion for deep expertise and skill mastery

How the Inventory Works

  • 36 simple statements rated on a 6-point scale
  • Takes 15 – 20 minutes to complete
